Newborn November @ Costco
Tuesday, October 11, 2011

Throughout the entire month of November, Costco will be supporting the Newborn Intensive Care Unit by raising funds in a variety of exciting ways.  All funds raised throughout November will go to the Newborn Intensive Care Foundation (NICF) that supports the NICU at the Canberra Hospital with donations of medical equipment, funding for research and nurse education grants.

You can get involved by:

Purchasing special message cards at the register. For a gold coin donation, you can write your own ‘well wishes’ message on the card which will be displayed on the wire fence inside Costco until the end of November. The aim is to completely fill the fence with cards. Once November is over, all of the cards will be collected and taken to NICU in the Canberra Hospital to be distributed to sick babies and their families.

Purchasing Fairy Floss. This will be a favourite with the kids during November. Fairy floss can be purchased for a gold coin donation at the entry to Costco. Please feel free to drop in any extra change you have on your way out as well!

Attending the ACT Health Directorate Shopping Day on the 24th November. If you are a staff member of the ACT Health Directorate, you are invited to attend a shopping day on the 24th November without having to pay the $60 membership it would normally cost you. All you need for entry for yourself and up to two friends is your ID Badge and a $20 donation to  the  NICU. This is a perfect opportunity for everyone to get started (or even finish) your Christmas shopping for the year. Don’t miss out on this fantastic opportunity!

Peter Cursley, Chairman of the Newborn intensive Care Foundation said “100% of funds raised by the NICF goes directly to helping sick newborns of the Canberra region in the form of equipment, research and nurse education grants for the neonatal intensive care unit at Canberra Hospital. The Costco funds raised through Newborn November will help fund equipment needed when the new Womens & Childrens Hospital opens in 2012."”

A huge thank you to Costco for their generous support of the NICU and the Canberra Hospital Foundation.

We look forward to seeing you there!

2012 Firefighters Calendar
Wednesday, July 27, 2011

The 2012 ACT Firefighters calendar will feature photos of 12 firefighters from across the ACT.

The calendar showcases the physical strength of our firefighters with the primary aim of the calendar is to raise funds for the community. Proceeds from the 2012 ACT Firefighters calendar will benefit the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of The Canberra Hospital, with 75 per cent of all monies raised going to the NICU. Last year, the ACT Firefighters raised $30,000 for the NICU, helping to care for more than 1,000 babies who suffered illnesses or complications following birth.

The remaining 25 per cent of proceeds from our 2012 calendar will be distributed to our range of benevolent charities, including the annual MIX106 Special Childrens’ Christmas Party.

Support this initiative and purchase a 2012 ACT Firefighters calendar.

Calendars will be available to purchase direct from Firefighters at various shopping centres through ou December or from King O'Malleys Irish Pub in Canberra's CBD (phone 6257 0111), Canberra's Tradesmens Clubs or from the Newborn Intensive Care Unit at Canberra Hospital (phone 6244 4056)

Webcam - linking family and newborns
Friday, May 15, 2009

Parents with babies staying at the Canberra Hospital's neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) are now able to monitor them from home via a webcam.

Health Minister Katy Gallagher says parents are not always able to visit their sick babies in the hospital, particularly if they live in regional New South Wales.

She says the new webcam service will help parents to bond with their children.

"What we're saying is if those parents can't be around or families and friends can't get into the NICU then this is another way of seeing that baby, of that baby being real and also seeing those baby changes," she said.

"Some of these babies will spend four months in the NICU, that's a long time and those babies will change enormously.

"With a password and in a secure environment they'll be able to go and have a look. So I think from a bonding point of view there's a lot of potential here."
